70 or so musicians, fans, venue owners/operators, music-related small business owners, and members of our City Government attended this meeting and shared their opinions and solutions. The agenda was:

  1. Presentation by TheYearOfAustinMusic.org founder Troy Dillinger. He will discuss the problem and his proposed solution.
  2. Guest speaker, Chris Gates (Big Boys/Poison 13/Junkyard/Big Chris Gates)
  3. Question & Answer forum in 'Town Hall" format

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

You may be unaware that there's a problem. Perhaps you feel that there's no solution. Or you may see a handful of Austin venues having success and think things are fine. But while some Austin musical institutions are doing well, much of Austin's priceless music scene is in danger.

More Austinites, but less money?

Huge resident surges, cost-of-living increases, traffic and parking concerns, noise issues, and lack of public awareness are threatening to silence the future of Austin music. In many Austin venues, audiences are smaller than ever, while the city grows almost unchecked; and Austin's musicians can't keep up financially as the costs of "Doing It Yourself" increase, their pay remains static, and their rents increase.

Billions of dollars are in danger of disappearing from our local economy if drastic action is not taken. Much has begun to disappear over the last 10 years. And whether or not you are a fan of Austin's live music, you are economically effected as a resident of the Greater Austin Area. Behind the slogan The Live Music Capital of the World, and in every local music venue, and on local TV and Radio, musicians are creating billions of dollars in revenue in our economy and making less than ever on the revenue they create. In fact, many of them are forced to take other jobs to pay for the money they lose playing the music which generates so much of Austin's economy. Many others are giving up entirely and leaving Austin or choosing to not play in public.

If the contribution of Austin's musicans disappear, so will an enormous segment of our economy and our quality of life.

But it's not too late to correct this crisis - and you can help!

It’s a large task and it will take unity to achieve, which means any solution to this problem must be simple and effective, so that all may participate. While we will refine our mission together - as a united music community - the initial plan will require that all aspects of Austin’s music community - musicians, fans, venues, small businesses, and political entitites - take action to benefit each other. But our plan has no “villains to punish” and everyone will benefit. A very simple combination of public awareness, political support, and business organization can solve this crisis.

First things first: A massive public information campaign can get Austinites back to live music venues and correct the most dire problem: an economic drought in Austin’s Live Music Scene. So how do we do this?

Our goal: Have every Austinite see one Austin band each month of 2008

NEXT: Step 2 - Form Panels to further discuss the problem and its solution

-and- Step 3 - Create a Public Relations campaign urging Austinites to "see one Austin band each month of 2008"

How does Mayor Will Wynn feel about Austin Music and it's needs?
